HYDERABAD METROPOLITAN WATER SUPPLY & SEWERAGE BOARD


Report on Financial Assistance required under SDRF for providing drinking  water 

supply during the year 2015-16 / 2016-17

 Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) is providing 

drinking water of 365 MGD for the entire area of GHMC including certain villages and 4 

No's of municipalities enroute. The supply meets the requirement of all State and 

Central Government institutions including Defence establishments, Secunderabad 

Cantonment Board etc. and industries like BHEL,ECIL, HCL etc.

 Due to failure of monsoon this year (June to Till now ) water levels in Singur, 

Osmansagar,  Himayat sagar and Nagarjunasagar sources have considerably reduced 

when compared to the last year levels as shown in the following table as on 30.11.2015.

 It is anticipated that there will be severe water crisis for the months of December till 

next monsoon.

 Bore wells which used to supplement the water requirements have likely to go dry 

because of drought condition prevailing in the State.  Hence, the problem will be further 

compounded.

 Power breakdowns, are likely to cause further dislocation of water supply services 

because water supply in Hyderabad is predominantly dependent on pumping system, 

since Krishna and Godavari are power dependent sources. The following contingency 

plan is worked out to address the issues during the year 2015-16.

ACTION PLAN:

 At Osmansagar reservoir the present level is 1757.290 ft. as on 30.11.2015. From 1-05-

2015 onwards 05.00MGD water is being drawn instead of normal 25.00 MGD with the 

arrangement of Emergency pumping and it is sufficient upto 28-02-2016. 

 At Himayathsagar, presently 5.00 MGD is being drawn by gravity upto 31-12-2015 and 

later with the arrangement of Emergency pumping and the available water is sufficient 

upto 30-06-2016. 

 The present level in Singoor Dam is 510.787 mts and the water at 120.00 MGD was 

drawn from 20.05.2015 with the arrangement of emergency pumping upto 30.11.2015. 

At present only 20.00 MGD is being drawn and the available water is sufficient upto 31-

03-2016 and water from dead storage can be drawn with arrangement of secondary 

pumping arrangements. 

 The present level in Nagarjunasagar reservoir is 509.000 ft and the water at 247.00 

MGD is being drawn at present. It needs to draw water by emergency pumping 

arrangement once the level touches 505.00 ft and needs secondary pumping 

arrangements once the level goes beyond 500.00 ft.

 Due to low levels in the reservoirs it may not be possible to provide piped water supply 

to certain elevated locations and needs to provide the water through tankers.

 HMWSSB will also take up repairs to the existing bore wells and convert the hand bore 

wells to power bore wells wherever water is available. 

 HMWSSB will take up installation of static tanks at new locations where piped water 

supply is not possible and alternate arrangement for water supply is required.

 Power breakdowns are likely to be experienced during the year and require generators 

at certain pumping houses and chlorination plants to ensure continuous pumping during 

local load shedding and power breakdowns of CPDCL.

 Due to depletion of water levels, water drawl from the dead storage are likely to contain 

high turbidity, growth of algae, etc which may require special treatment procedures 

including use of chemicals like Activated Carbon, Non-Ferric Alum etc., to address water 

quality issues. 

 It needs diversion of Krishna/Godavari water to Manjeera system at Lingampally 

reservoir premises, Hydernagar reservoir premises, at Shaikpet and other locations so as 

to meet the short fall in Manjeera system.

           CALAMITY RELIEF PLAN FOR WATER SUPPLY DURING THE YEAR 2015-

16/2016-17              

I.    Transmission System 

i) Osmansagar System:

      a) Emergency pumping arrangements for extended period including 

      b) Arrangements to divert the stagnated water from pools to the pumping  

area by constructing temporary bunds, channelizing with excavator 

etc., 

      c)  Procurement of chemicals like poly Aluminium Chloride, Non- Ferric 

Alum and Activated Carbon to overcome the water quality issues while 

drawing the water from dead storage. 

      d) Arrangements for diverting Krishna water to Osmansagar system. 0.20 

ii) Himayathsagar System: 

      a) Emergency pumping arrangements including necessary equipment. 0.20 

      b) Arrangements to divert the stagnated water from pools to the pumping  

area by constructing temporary bunds, channelizing with excavator 

etc., 

      c) Procurement of chemicals like poly Aluminium Chloride, Non- Ferric 

Alum and Activated Carbon to overcome the water quality issues while 

drawing the water from dead storage. 

      d) Arrangements for diverting Krishna water to Himayathsagar system 0.20 

iii)   Manjeera system: 

a) Erecting platform for secondary pumping arrangements including 

necessary equipment.

b) Dismantling, shifting and reassembling the existing emergency 

pumping equipment including all necessary mechanical and electrical 

items at secondary pumping platform. 

       c) Arrangements to divert the stagnated water from pools to the pumping  

area by constructing temporary bunds, channelizing with excavator 

etc., 

    d) Procurement of chemicals like poly Aluminium Chloride, Non- Ferric Alum 

and Activated Carbon to overcome the water quality issues while 

necessary equipment.

 e) Arrangements for pumping of leaked water through gates at Singoor into 

Jackwell also backwash water at Water Treatment Plants in Rajampet, 

Kalabgoor and Peddapur and plugging leakages through Manjeera 

Barrage. 

 f) Arrangements for diverting Krishna / Godavari water into Phase-III of  

Manjeera system at Lingampally reservoir premises.

g)  Arrangements for diverting Krishna / Godavari water into Phase-I of  

Manjeera system at Lingampally reservoir premises.

h) Arrangements for diverting Krishna water into Phase-II of Manjeera 

system at Hydernagar reservoir premises.

i)  Arrangements for diverting Krishna water into Manjeera system at 

Shaikpet Nala. 

j)  Arrangements for diverting Godavari water into Manjeera system at 

Kukatpally by interconnecting 1800mm dia MS pipe to 700mm dia MS 

pipe.

k) Arrangements for diverting Godavari water into Manjeera system at 

Kukatpally by interconnecting 1800mm dia MS pipe to 800mm dia MS 

pipe.

l) Arrangements for diverting Krishna water to Manjeera system from 

Mailardevpally pumping station to Bahadurpura with all necessary inlet 

and outlet arrangements at necessary places. 

m) Arrangements for diversion of Krishna water to Manjeera system from 

Prashasannagar reservoir to Thattikhana reservoir. 

iv) Krishna System

a) Emergency pumping arrangements including Electrical pumping 

installations, formation of Earthern bund, channelizing etc., 

b) Secondary pumping arrangements to cater to the first level  

emergency pumping station once the level  depletes to 500.0 ft in 

Nagarjunsagar reservoir with supplying and fixing of necessary 

submersible pumps, electrical panels, making sump etc.,

   c) Diversion of Krishna Phase-III water to Krishna Phase II system by 

linking Ring   mains of both phases near Shaikpet to cater to the 

areas fed by Singoor system. 

    d)  Procurement of chemicals like poly Aluminum Chloride, Non- Ferric 

Alum   and Activated Carbon to overcome the water quality issues 

while drawing the water from dead storage. 

v) Godavari system

a) Emergency pumping arrangements including Electrical pumping 

installations, formation of Earthern bund, channelizing etc., 

VI)  Contingency plan to meet power breakdowns:

 Providing generators at pumping stations to ensure continuous pumping 

during load shedding operation / power breakdowns. 5.00 

II.   Distribution System

    a) Transportation of water through tankers to the Ill Served areas where 

piped water is not possible  due to insufficient water : 

    b) Repairs to Hand Pumps and converting hand pump bore wells to power 

bore wells where ever possible to supplement piped water supply :   

    c)  Repairs to Static Tanks / New Installations in the areas where piped 

water supply cannot be given due to insufficient water. 

Total Calamity Relief Plan for 2015-16 / 2016-17   works out to  Rs.134.30 

Crores.
